Idaho Martin Luther King Day College and University Celebrations

College of Idaho:

Below is the schedule for Monday’s MLK Day of Special Recognition. The College’s intent is that it is a “day on” rather than a “day off,” and that everyone is encouraged to take part in any of the day’s activities. Classes will not be held in order to ensure everyone is able to attend events without conflict. This is a campus-wide day of special recognition of the important values extoled by Martin Luther King, Jr., so we hope you will attend some or all of the events throughout the day.

Monday, January 18th
10:00-11:00 a.m. – United Way Poverty Simulation (KAIC 107)
1:00-2:30 p.m. – Keynote Address “Today Matters: Building Our Community's Legacy” by Dr. Larry Roper and dessert reception - Hosted by the President’s Office (Langroise Recital Hall and Lobby)
3:00-4:00 p.m. – Bafa Bafa Diversity Simulation (KAIC 107)
6:30-7:30 p.m. – Choir (Jewett Auditorium)
8:00-9:30 p.m. – The Color of Conscience Documentary (McCain Movie Theater)

Monday, January 18

MLK Day of Greatness Poster Making Session
9:00 a.m. – Student Union Jordan Ballroom
Materials will be provided to create personalized posters and signs to display during the annual MLK March and Rally.
MLK Day of Greatness March and Rally
10:30 a.m. – Student Union Jordan Ballroom
The Day of Greatness March begins at the Jordan Ballroom and concludes at the capitol steps. The rally at the capitol steps begins with the arrival of the marchers and includes student speakers and performances.
The state of Idaho celebration in the capitol rotunda begins at the conclusion of the rally at noon.

Keynote Panel: “The fierce urgency of NOW”

Hosted by the MLK Living Legacy Committee, featured panelists include:
Bishop John R. Selders Jr. CLS, D.D.
The Bishop is the organizing pastor of Amistad United Church of Christ, Hartford, CT, Associate College Chaplain, Trinity College, Hartford, CT, Executive Director of Zezzo House (an 18 unit housing project) and one of the leaders of Moral Monday CT. Follow Dr. Selders on Facebook and Twitter.
Ashley “Brown Blaze” Yates
Known to the twitterverse as @brownblaze, Ashley is one of the founding organizers of Millennial Activists United and was on the ground in Ferguson, MO during the civil unrest surrounding the national controversy over the Michael Brown case. She was featured on the Huffington Post “Faces from Ferguson” series and has been featured in countless interviews and articles.
Honorable Idaho State Senator, Cherie Buckner Webb (dist. 19)
Elected to the Idaho House of Representatives in 2010 and the Idaho Senate in 2012 and 2014 by wide margins, she is also the founder and principal of Sojourner Coaching. Her expertise includes cross cultural collaboration, leadership development, facilitation, consultation and coaching for individuals, teams and organizations. Additionally, Buckner-Webb is a respected motivational speaker who uses her voice to raise awareness about leadership, diversity, inclusion and human rights topics.

University of Idaho:

Social justice activist and co-creator of the #BlackLivesMatter movement Alicia Garza will be the keynote speaker at the University of Idaho in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and Human Rights Day.

Garza will present “Be the Dream: Inspiring Insights Into the Origins and Significance of #BlackLivesMatter” and discuss how the political project evolved into a global movement and how social media served as a platform to elevate their dreams, vision, hopes and deep abiding love for humanity.

Garza serves as the Special Projects Director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance. She is a queer, feminist, social justice activist who works on important community causes, including those that work to end police brutality, racism, homophobia, sexism and violence against minorities. more »

The Latah County Human Rights Task Force invites the public to the 24th Annual Martin Luther King Jr./ Human Rights Community Breakfast. The event will feature a full breakfast, entertainment, presentation of Rosa Parks Human Rights Achievement Awards, announcement of Martin Luther King Art and Essay Contest winners; and keynote talk by Alicia Garza, co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement. Tickets are priced at $8.00 general admission and $ 4.00 for students and children. more »

To commemorate the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as well as the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., University of Idaho undergraduates, graduates and professional students enrolled for the spring 2016 semester are invited to write an essay or create an artistic piece in the medium of their choice in response to a prompt about equality and social, racial and ethnic justice. more »
